PEEBLES AND IT'S SURROUNDING AREA

Peebles is the county town of the old county of Peeblesshire in the Scottish Borders. Situated in a natural basin at the meeting place of 5 valleys - the Manor, the Eddleston, the Lyne, the Glensax and the Innerleithen valleys all provide a panorama of views outward from this very pretty town.

The town is bisected by the River Tweed which runs through the centre and is edged by parks and walks - this gives a very open, tranquil area in the centre of the town. The High Street is a wide, busy thoroughfare with a variety of interesting shops and cafes.

We have a wide variety of houses and castles of historic interest within easy walking, cycling and travelling distances. During the Spring, Summer and early Autumn we have a large selection of gardens which are open to the public with the Scottish Garden Scheme.

To the south we have the Border towns of Galashiels, Selkirk, Melrose and Jedburgh all with their own unique characters and to the North we have Edinburgh with it's International Airport, railway station and frequent bus link to Peebles and all the entertainment of a capital city. 45 miles to the West we have Glasgow, another International Airport, and a totally different type of city.

The town of Peebles is a Royal Burgh - it's Charter was granted by King David II, who hunted in the surrounding forests, in 1367. Many of the place names in the town relate this royal connection - Kingsland, Kingsmuir and Kingsmeadows to name but three.

Peebles also has literary and publishing connections - The Chambers brothers (they of the dictionaries!) were born here, John Buchan and his sister Anna Buchan were born at Broughton but lived and worked at this area of the High Street for several years prior to his posting to Canada.

As well as being a very popular venue for walkers and cyclists there is also some wonderful horseriding in the areas surrounding Peebles with two well established Riding Schools on the outskirts of the town.
